Removing Invalid Entries in the Add/Remove Programs Tool

The following steps remove only the registry entries related to a program as it appears in the Add/Remove Programs tool. To completely remove a program that was not completely removed by clicking the Change/Remove button in the Add/Remove Programs tool, you need to clean up the physical directory structure on disk and in the registry as well. Use extreme caution when you perform either of these tasks.

To remove a program reference viewable in the Add/Remove Programs tool:

Start Registry Editor (Regedit.exe).
Locate the following key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall
Locate the key to be deleted by locating the key name created by the program. If the name of the key is not apparent, browse through each key and note the value for DisplayName. This is the viewable string in the Add/Remove Programs tool.
Using the Registry menu, export the selected registry key to make a backup. Store the .reg file in a safe location in case you need to import it at a later date.
Delete the selected registry key and its values. Do not delete the entire Uninstall key.
Quit Registry Editor.
Verify that the reference in the Add/Remove Programs tool is no longer visible.

You may have to contact the manufacturer of the program that you want to remove if you need to clean up the disk and registry entries. The procedure described in this section does not remove all the files and registry entries used by the program; it removes only the reference in the Add/Remove Programs tool.

"Could Not Clear DNS Cache" - Problem Solved

This problem occurs if the DNS Client service is not running on the computer.

To resolve this problem, follow these steps:

Click Start, click Run, type services.msc, and then click OK.
In the list of services, click DNS Client.
Make sure that the Status column displays Started and that the Startup Type column displays Automatic.
If the service is not set to Started or if the startup type for the DNS Client service is not set to Automatic, follow these steps:
1. Right-click DNS Client, and then click Properties.
2. In the DNS Client Properties dialog box, click the General tab, and then click Automatic in the Startup type list.
3. Click Start, click Apply, and then click OK.

Configure Outlook Express Using Gmail

1. If you have an Gmail account then Ok, otherwise create an Gmail account.
2. Open Microsoft Outlook Express from start menu.
3. Then in Outlook Express Window, goto Tools->Accounts->Add->Mail
4. In the new window type your name (e.g John Smith). Click Next.
5. Type your Gmail id (e.g john@gmail.com). Click Next.
6. Select "POP3" as your incoming mail server.
7. Type "pop.gmail.com" in the text box for your incoming(POP) mail server.
8. Type "smtp.gmail.com" in the text box for your outgoing mail(SMTP) server. Click Next.
9. Now type your login id( e.g john) in the text box for your Account Name.
10. Then type your password(e.g *********) and make sure you check the box named Remember Me.
11. Click Next then click Finish.
12. Cl0se all the sub window except the main Outlook Express Window.
13. Again goto Tool->Accounts. Click on the tab named Mail.
14. Select your account and click on Properties just on the right.
15. Click on the tab named Server, check the chock box name My server requires authentication.
16. Click in the tab named Advanced, type 465 and 995 in the text box named Outgoing Mail(SMTP) and Incoming Mail(POP3) respectively. Do not forget to check the two check boxes named This server requires a secure connection(SSL). Click OK.
17. Configuration complete. Now you can send or receive emails using Outlook Express.

Problem of "jwgkvsq.vmx" Has Been Resolved

(PROBLEM)

Now a days this is a very popular problem that when every time you delete "jwgkvsq.vmx" from your removable drive from the following location -------
".\RECYCLER\S-5-3-42-2819952290-8240758988-879315005-3665\jwgkvsq.vmx" then every time it recreates. But when you scan your system with antivirus then no-one can not detect this.

(SYMPTOMS)

You can not see your hidden files in your computer. You can not open some websites like microsoft.com, spywareterminator.com etc.

(SOLUTION)

Install AVAST antivirus with latest updates. Schedule a boot time full system scan and reboot the PC. After some time it detect a worm(a DLL file) in System32 folder. In my case the file name was "cfgnm.dll". But the file name may not be same because it create a DLL file with random name. Actually it was locked by a system file named "svchost.exe". So the antivirus can not detect it while running Windows. So when the file is detected by boot scan the offcourse delete it.

Step 1 - Modify Explorer.exe File

In order to make the changes, the file explorer.exe located at C:\Windows needs to be edited. Since explorer.exe is a binary file it requires a special editor. For purposes of this article I have used Resource Hacker. Resource HackerTM is a freeware utility to view, modify, rename, add, delete and extract resources in 32bit Windows executables and resource files (*.res). It incorporates an internal resource script compiler and decompiler and works on Microsoft Windows 95/98/ME, Windows NT, Windows 2000 and Windows XP operating systems.

The first step is to make a backup copy of the file explorer.exe located at C:\Windows\explorer. Place it in a folder somewhere on your hard drive where it will be safe. Start Resource Hacker and open explorer.exe located at C:\Windows\explorer.exe.

The category we are going to be using is "String Table". Expand it by clicking the plus sign then navigate down to and expand string 37 followed by highlighting 1033. If you are using the Classic Layout rather than the XP Layout, use number 38. The right hand pane will display the stringtable. We’re going to modify item 578, currently showing the word “start” just as it displays on the current Start button.

There is no magic here. Just double click on the word “start” so that it’s highlighted, making sure the quotation marks are not part of the highlight. They need to remain in place, surrounding the new text that you’ll type. Go ahead and type your new entry. In my case I used Click Me!

You’ll notice that after the new text string has been entered the Compile Script button that was grayed out is now active. I won’t get into what’s involved in compiling a script, but suffice it to say it’s going to make this exercise worthwhile. Click Compile Script and then save the altered file using the Save As command on the File Menu. Do not use the Save command – Make sure to use the Save As command and choose a name for the file. Save the newly named file to C:\Windows.

Step 2 – Modify the Registry

Now that the modified explorer.exe has been created it’s necessary to modify the registry so the file will be recognized when the user logs on to the system. If you don’t know how to access the registry I’m not sure this article is for you, but just in case it’s a temporary memory lapse, go to Start (soon to be something else) Run and type regedit in the Open field. Navigate to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ SOFTWARE\ Microsoft\ Windows NT\ CurrentVersion\ Winlogon

In the right pane, double click the "Shell" entry to open the Edit String dialog box. In Value data: line, enter the name that was used to save the modified explorer.exe file. Click OK.

Close Registry Editor and either log off the system and log back in, or reboot the entire system if that’s your preference. If all went as planned you should see your new Start button with the revised text.

Create A Special Folder In My Computer or Desktop

Create your own custom system folder, like "My Documents", that can not be deleted or renamed and place it on the desktop and My Computer.

Create the following series of keys and values in the registry at [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID] or [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID]. The GUID, globally unique identifier, can be a random number, in this example "FD4DF9E0-E3DE-11CE-BFCF-ABCD1DE12345" is used. See this article for more GUID examples.

1)Create a new key called [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{FD4DF9E0-E3DE-11CE-BFCF-ABCD1DE12345}] and set (Default) to equal the name of the folder e.g. "My Folder".

2)Create a new sub-key under the main key called "DefaultIcon" (i.e. [HKEY_CLASSES...ABCD1DE12345}\DefaultIcon]) and set (Default) to equal the filename for the icon you want to display e.g. "c:\windows\myicon.ico".

3)Create a new sub-key under the main key called "InProcServer32" (i.e. [HKEY_CLASSES...ABCD1DE12345}\InProcServer32]) and set (Default) to equal "shell32.dll", also create a new String value called "ThreadingModel" and set it to "Apartment".

4)Create a set of sub-keys starting at the main key "Shell\Open My Menu\Command" (i.e. [HKEY_CLASSES...ABCD1DE12345}\Shell\Open My Folder\Command]) and set (Default) to equal the command to execute when clicked, in this case explorer, e.g. "explorer /root,c:\MyFolder".

5)Create a set of sub-keys starting at the main key "ShellEx\PropertySheetHandlers\{FD4DF9E0-E3DE-11CE-BFCF-ABCD1DE12345}" (i.e. [HKEY_CLASSES...ABCD1DE12345}\ShellEx\PropertySheetHandlers\{FD4DF9E0-E3DE-11CE-BFCF-ABCD1DE12345}])

6)Create a new sub-key under the main key called "ShellFolder" (i.e. [HKEY_CLASSES...ABCD1DE12345}\ShellFolder]) and create a new Binary value called "Attributes" and set it to "00 00 00 00".

7)(Optional) To place the folder on the desktop add the following key:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\
Explorer\Desktop\NameSpace\{FD4DF9E0-E3DE-11CE-BFCF-ABCD1DE12345}]

8)(Optional) To place the folder in My Computer add the following key:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\
Explorer\MyComputer\NameSpace\{FD4DF9E0-E3DE-11CE-BFCF-ABCD1DE12345}]

Now the folder cannot be deleted from the desktop or My Computer, nor can it be renamed other than removing the CLSID and the entries under NAMESPACE.
